Totem Lodge just outside of Sioux Narrows, Ontario first opened
its doors in 1935 under the name Qui-Qua-Quay Lodge, and operated
until 1948 under the ownership of Mrs. Metcalf. Although all that
remains of the original Lodge is our magnificent stone fireplace
and two cabins, we take pride in the fact that our moose in the
main lodge was shot by Mrs. Metcalf herself.
In 1948, Mel Stinchfield purchased the lodge from Mrs. Metcalf and changed the name to Mel's Canadian Camps until it was purchased by Bill and Lucia Salvador in 1954. At that time, major renovations took place to the now "Totem Lodge" resulting in the world class facility you presently enjoy.
The Browns became the proprietors in the fall of 1978 and are proud
to be celebrating their 30th anniversary. Over the years, the Browns
have put much time and effort into making Totem Lodge on Lake of
the Woods the five star facility it is today. Within the past 10
years, the Browns have also become the proud owners of Wiley Point
Lodge, Yellowbird Lodge and Chalet and French Portage Outpost. All of these lodges have
grown to be as exceptional and focused on customer service as Totem
Lodge. The union of these four Grand Canadian Lodges has created
Totem Resorts - Northwestern Ontario's "Jewels of the North".
All of the beautifully carved totem poles and Native works of art
found at Totem Lodges are authentic pieces of our local history.
In 1957, Chief Charles Dudoward carved the first totem pole in front
of the lodge, from a specially selected B.C. Redwood, which was
transported down the Peace River and delivered to Sioux Narrows
Ontario. In 1980 and 1981, the Browns commissioned Chief Kitpou
from British Columbia to carve many of the totem poles and Native
artifacts, which are now proudly displayed throughout the lodge.
